Official guidance for sole traders

Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS)

SEISS will support sole traders who have lost income due to Covid-19.

You’ll be able to claim a taxable grant worth 80% of your trading profits up to a maximum of £2,500 per month for the next 3 months.

Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS)

Sole traders can claim CBILS, an interest-free loan of up to £5m to help them through Covid-19-related difficulties.

To apply, discuss your business plan with one of the 40 accredited finance providers as soon as possible.

Employment Support Allowance (ESA)

As a sole trader, you can apply for ESA if you have a disability or health condition that affects how much you can work.

ESA offers:

  • Money to help with living costs if you’re unable to work
  • Support to get back into work if you’re able to

Universal Credit (UC)

If you’re on a low income or out of work, you may be eligible for UC to help with your living costs.

During the coronavirus period the payments are raised to £94.25 a week.
